FT REPORT - SOUTH KOREA 2007: Many achievements to celebrate

Just 10 years ago, South Korea was in the throes of the most tumultuous financial crisis in

its history. The currency went into freefall, banks and industrial companies began collapsing, and Koreans lined up to donate their gold jewellery to try to refill the country's coffers.

Now, Korea is a strong, healthy economy - Asia's third largest. Its brands such as Samsung, LG and Hyundai, on-ce synonymous with copycat manufacturing and inferior quality, have emerged as global leaders.

The country has more than $250bn in foreign currency reserves, the benchmark Kospi stock index keeps setting new highs above the 2,000 mark, exports remain strong despite the

strong won, and cash-rich companies are beginning to look abroad for acquisition opportunities. Seoul has forged a bilateral trade agreement with the US and a similar pact

with the European Union is under negotiation.

There have been other advances too. The country is about to hold its fifth democratic presidential election, after five years in which President Roh Moo-hyun has made great

efforts to clean up Korean politics, making it more transparent and less corrupt.

On the geopolitical front, remarkably good progress is being made on the North Korean nuclear crisis just on-e year after its first atomic test, and Mr Roh this year forged a surprisingly pragmatic agreement during the second inter-Korean summit in Pyongyang

earlier this month.

The Hallyu Korean wave of popular culture has rippled out further from its hit success in

Asia. Most notably, Jeon Do-yeon, the star of the Korean film Secret Sunshine, won the

best actress award at the Cannes film festival this year
